This is a fascinating wine, the most vinous of Paillard’s current releases, offering quiet scents of fresh pear, dried caramel and honeycomb without any hint of sweetness. While Champagne without dosage can sometimes be aggressive in its textures or flavors, this one is delicate. The wine’s stamina seems to grow out of its rich flavor depth, extending into a luscious texture and compelling persistence.

Winemaker Notes

There are more than 30 crus of the finest terroir of Champagne in the blend, the
composition of which is a house secret.  Exceptionally high for Champagne, the “reserve wines” account for half of the blend. They are the other essential player in the D : Z cuvée. Some of these wines underwent their first fermentation in barrel. They were then kept in stainless steel, and for some of them for more than 10 years in bottle, resulting in an intensified autolysis.  Ageing is far longer than the legal requirement: three to four years in bottle “sur lies”, followed by six months rest after disgorgement.

Intense, bright, straw gold.  Very fine and persistent effervescence. Primary notes of white fruits and fresh almond, generous but not opulent.  This is followed by aromas of chocolate and toast with fresh raspberry, star anise and candied chestnuts. The attack is both lively and rich, blossoming generously on the palate. The same aromatic richness promised on the nose is found on the palate. Texture is both animated and chiselled, with saline notes, and a very long, persistent finish.

Deep ruby-purple, the 2019 Gibson Block Syrah has a core of cassis and soaring violet perfume with accents of coffee beans, dark chocolate, aniseed and mint. The full-bodied palate is powerful and concentrated with broody, iron-laced fruits, pleasantly chewy tannins and bright freshness elevating floral perfume on the finish.

Winemaker's Notes

Marietta Cellars sits in the entrance to a small canyon off Alexander Valley. Known as Angeli Ranch after the family who originally settled here in 1886, this property’s vineyards connect gravel swales from the Russian River to terraced knolls invisible from the valley floor. The extremes of this site create a wine that is powerful but has surprising elegance and clarity. 

The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA. It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California. This ancient, dry farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. Reflecting the hidden property where it is grown, this Syrah is quiet, obscure and profound. Limited in production due to the unique grape source, this wine is built to enjoy with food and will age at least a decade, only increasing in subtleness and complexity.

Winemaker Notes

Fauno Arcanum is a Bordeaux blend that embodies the diversity of the estate. It comes mainly from the Arceno di Sotto, La Curva, Colombaio and San Giovanni blocks, located in the south-west part of the estate, in a lower and warmer subsection, well exposed and which ripens early. The soils are predominantly clayey, with high water retention and produce wines that tend to be richer and more opulent.

The nose reveals fresh and juicy aromas of strawberries and raspberries, with notes of mint. The palate is rich with flavors of ripe plums and bright cherries, as well as floral tones of rose and honeysuckle notes. Soft tannins are framed by lively acids. The finish is long and spicy with notes of nutmeg and black licorice, followed by persistent white pepper and tobacco.

Cedary oak with plenty of dark chocolate, tapenade, black beans, roasted pepper and blackberries. Recognizable cabernet characters give this depth and a demureness. Despite the robust aromas, this Sangiovese is actually quite streamlined and polished in texture. The tannins are soft and veering toward accessibility. This is an ambitious production of 200,000 bottles. The estate's Riserva Vigna Paganelli was not made in 2018, so fruit from that wine went here instead.

Characterised by rare freshness, this cuvée is delightfully chiseled and saline whilst also displaying the fullness of a prolonged lees ageing. The illustrating artwork was created by French artist Anne Commet inspired by the theme "Liberté."

A brilliant, pale gold tint, with a fine and chiselled effervescence. Nose: A both fresh and biting, and generous. Primary notes of cooled ashes and white flowers (hawthorn), opening somewhat slowly to reveal white peach and lemon verbena, with fresh almond. Palate: Lively and precise, with a crystalline and limpid attack, diffusing a beguiling salinity. The wine then settles in the mouth with a texture that is both ample and molten. There is almost a minty freshness on the palate, accompanied – as the wine opens up – by a slightly fleshy fruitiness plums which evolves towards roasted hazelnuts. It calls for the texture of monkfish or prawns as an accompaniment.

Classic Hunter Valley Semillon from another strong vintage. The nose is vibrant with an abundance of citrus fruits and floral elements. The palate is medium bodied, yet intense, with great length and a brisk acidity.

2023 was a classic Semillon vintage in the Hunter Valley, producing full flavoured Semillons with the power and intensity only seen in truly great vintages. This wine is sourced predominantly from our iconic HVD Vineyard, with an average vine age of 30 years.

In the lead up to the 2023 vintage, there was an abundance of rain in spring which gave us great soil moisture heading into the dry months of December and January. The harvest period was relatively stress-free without any adverse conditions such as rain or heat. All of the Semillon cropped well and was in immaculate condition.

After gentle pressing, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks. The wine then spent a short amount of time on yeast lees to gain extra complexity and mouth feel.

Based in Hunter Valley, Australia, Tyrrell's produces one of the world's most famous (and delicious) Semillons, Vat 1. This more entry-level wine showcases the typical character of young Semillon, with lime flower perfume on the nose, bracing acidity and a depth of juicy lime citrus fruit on the palate. It's very enjoyable now – try it with sushi – but I'd urge you to buy a bottle or two to lay down. Leave it for a few years and it will start to develop nuttier, toastier characteristics, despite spending no time in oak during vinification.

Arcanum is the pinnacle of the estate’s offerings. A pure Cabernet Franc and true signature of the estate, this remarkable wine is built to age yet is drinkable young, offering aromas of violets, roses and raspberries, with long and delicate spice notes; it is a wine that is seductive yet subtle. Arcanum is sourced from 12 different blocks of Cabernet Franc that each year, thanks to their superb exposure and sandy clay soils, produce the finest expression of the variety for the leading wine of the estate.

The 2017 vintage was powerful with hot summer days and abundant sunshine, ripening the Cabernet Franc rapidly. But as summer transitioned to fall, Tuscany had moderate rainfall and cool evenings, allowing the grapes ample time on the vine. This vintage was exceptionally ripe with lower yields that produced wines with concentrated and notably intense flavours.

A Cabernet Franc that embodies a sense-of-place, distinctive of the diverse micro-crus of each vineyard block hand-selected for this vintage. Aromas of sweet oregano, mint and tart cherries are familiar to the nose on this Tuscan single-varietal wine. The palate is soft and round, framed by subtle acid. A core of fresh blueberries, dark chocolate and salted caramel are balanced by a long, elegant finish with hints of licorice, cedar and tobacco. A powerful, expressive Cabernet Franc to be enjoyed for decades.

This wine is now a 100% expression of Cabernet Franc. The 2017 Arcanum is the top-shelf red from Tenuta di Arceno. It is a rich, almost meaty wine, with dark fruit, savory tobacco, smoked bacon and sweet earth. What distinguishes this hot-vintage wine, however, are the rosemary and dried lavender that give this wine an authentically Tuscan personality. This is really quite nice.

Momtazi Vineyard is located in the McMinnville AVA, 7 miles west of McMinnville, Oregon. The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine come from four blocks at the top of the vineyard on a steep, exposed and windblown hillsides. Planted in 1999 and 2004 on thin, poor soils, the vines have a south and SW exposure at an elevation of 680-760'. The vineyard is certified biodynamic by Demeter. 

Dark ruby red color. Deep perfumed aromas of dried red fruit, concentrated tomato paste, turmeric, and red peppercorns are beguiling and draw you in. The mouth begins with fresh dark red fruit that quickly crescendos, radiating blackberries and blueberries, sweet tar, and spices throughout your palate. Lovely textural richness coats your palate (the “umami”), leaving denser tannins and beautifully balanced acidity. As hard to resist as it is now, this vintage of Momtazi will reward your patience. Perfect with earthy dishes with umami like pho, ramen, braised meats, roasts, mushrooms or dishes with eastern spices.

There is a wild and rustic side to the 2019 Las Olvidadas Mezcla Tinta, even more noticeable in the 2020 I also tasted. It comes from their vineyard in Santa Cruz de Guarilihue where the ancient vines of País and San Francisco vines are intermixed in the field. 2019 was a dry vintage in Itata, but they managed to keep the wine at 13% alcohol and with mellow acidity. The grapes fermented together after being hand destemmed with a zaranda destemmer like the traditional Pipeño wines, without any additions. The wine was put in barrel for malolactic and 18 months of aging. It's perfumed and intriguing, light to medium-bodied and with a strong personality. 4,371 bottles and 50 magnums were filled in October 2020.

 The Ink Grade Estate Vineyard claims a view unbeknownst to most in the Napa Valley, lying in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA. Terraced throughout due to the extreme slopes, this mountainside vineyard clings to volcanic “tufa” soils. Ink Grade Estate possesses a raw tension that renders fruit of immense intensity and depth. If ever there was a site that imparted a feeling of reverence, Ink Grade is such a place.

The varying and distinctive landscape of the vineyard parcels included in this Cabernet Sauvignon allow for something very complex to come together. With balance across the board, the fruit from the unique parcels each occupy a certain piece of terrain covering much of the Napa Valley with variations in slope and elevation. Incorporating a portion of Howell Mountain Cabernet, the blending notes of this wine are phenomenal with base notes, high notes, and incredible breadth.

The Ink Grade Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a nose of fresh cassis, pomegranate, and cocoa with elements of thyme, mint, candied orange peels, nutmeg, cloves, and paprika. Sourced entirely from Charles Ranch and pouring a pale straw color, the 2021 Chardonnay Fort Ross-Seaview is fresh and lifted with aromas of salted lime, sea spray, agave, and green pineapple. On the palate. this medium-bodied white is spritely with notes of crunchy fresh fruit and has a silky soft, stony texture to round out its linear drive. It’s fresh with vibrant energy and ripe fruit, white peach, and fresh flowers. Drink it over the next 6-8 years.

This wine is made up of the following: 40% Chardonnay sourced from the best Crus in the region, 30% Pinot Noir from the Montage de Reims and the Grande Vallée de la Marne and 30% Pinot Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne and the southern slopes of Epernay. This cuvee uses 40% reserve wines, is vinified in stainless steel, undergoes malolactic fermentation and ages on its lees for 36 months. 

With its subtle and gourmet aromas, this cuvée is a reference point amongst rosé champagnes. It will be a pleasant companion to your happiest moments with its sparkling colour, its amazing finesse and its great intensity.

Winemaker Notes

This Barolo has a special value for our family and represents the history and tradition of blending different cru of Barolo. Our Barolo comes from the best plots of seven cru. The diversity of soils, exposure and altitude characterizes each of these small but very important terroir. Unifying these diversities, the Barolo offers harmony and complexity with an overall character of the zone.

Separate vinfication. Destemming and light crushing. The maceration and the alcoholic fermentation are in stainless steel with temperature controlled and indigenous yeasts. Malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The tartaric stabilization occurs naturally during the winter with the low temperatures.

Each plots of the crus is kept separate and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months and further 12months in large casks. Final blend as a result of a further selection in the cellar of the most performing plots of the vintage. Approximately one year of stainless steel and 10 months of bottle aging before release.

The fresh flowers, like roses, really come through here. Perfumed. Sliced strawberry and citrus. Full-bodied with linear and tight tannins. Bright acidity gives it drive and focus. Give it four or five years to soften and come together.

The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA. It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California. This ancient, dry farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. As a result of the vine age and miniscule yield, this wine is dark and intense. White flowers, dried orange peel, and a windswept garrigue of black tea, fig cake and Luxardo cherry floods the nose. A long wall of amaro-like texture fills the mouth, yet the feel is light and lively, and the finish is clean. Delicious with hearty fare now, and built to age.

Deep ruby-purple, the 2019 Gibson Block Syrah has a core of cassis and soaring violet perfume with accents of coffee beans, dark chocolate, aniseed and mint. The full-bodied palate is powerful and concentrated with broody, iron-laced fruits, pleasantly chewy tannins and bright freshness elevating floral perfume on the finish.

Ruby, violet-tinted color. Expressive nose with aromas of ripe black fruit, rose and sweet spices. A generous and robust wine. Long and mineral finish brings a touch of elegance to this complex cuvée.

Known for giving body and structure to Pommard’s Clos Marey-Monge Monopole, the Grands Esprits plot makes Pommard of great quality and structure. The 4.81-hectare plot of Grands Esprits has large, round, rocky, limestone-rich soils planted between 1970 and 1980. It produces a straight Pinot Noir with firm tannins and potential for long aging. Occupying almost one-quarter of our vineyard’s overall area, the 220 rows of Grands Esprits is the most calcareous area in the Clos Marey-Monge. Hand-harvested organic grapes, hand-sorted on a vibrating table. 20% whole-cluster. Placed into stainless steel fermentation vats by gravity flow. Weeks-long maceration, minimal pumping-over and punching-down. Pressing in pneumatic press. Aged 18 months in 25% new French oak barrels on fine lees.

The Grands Esprits has the highest limestone content of all the plots of Clos Marey-Monge and this supple, silky Pinot Noir with vibrant acidity and firm, angular tannins is a fantastic representation of this terroir. Red cherry and raspberry flavors are intensely ripe yet zesty, accented by tangs of tart blood orange and a deep granitic undertone. Approachable young, the wine is likely to improve through 2035 and hold further still.

The cooler to moderate temperatures during the growing season allowed us to balance sugar and phenolic maturity in the fruit while maintaining natural acidity to help preserve the fresh characteristics of the vintage. The elegance and balanced structure of the 2018 vintage will make this an incredible wine to drink upon release and will continue to reward with cellar aging.

A pure, balanced and fresh Napa cabernet that is not just showing heady concentration and dark fruit. Here you get some violets, nimble flowers, redcurrants, graphite and fine spices. Some oranges, too. Fragrant and nuanced. Medium to full body with tight yet refined tannins. Rather linear, tense and elegant, but lacking neither power nor definition. Better to give it a few years to deliver more complexity.

Somewhat inscrutable and firm at the moment, this structured and lean Cuvée Nicolas François stands to gain considerable expressiveness with time under cork. Short-pruned 40-50 year old vines from the "Wolfreben" lieu-dit in the Kaysersberg valley between the Clos des Capucins and the village of Kaysersberg. The soil is sand-silt on granite pebbles. The grapes growing on this terroir ripen early and produce wines with powerful concentration. Aged in large, old oak vats for 8–10 months. RS 11.6 g/l, TA 3.6 g/l, pH 3.7.
Seductive, pungent, rich nose suggestive of both cream and lychees. Luscious mid palate but finishes dry. Surprisingly appetising and contained – and characteristically varietal. Satin-smooth on the palate and, I would imagine, very versatile at the table.

12% alcohol. A blend of Pinot Noir (60%) and Chardonnay (40%) from eight crus. 20% fermented in used French oak barrels. Eight years on lees followed by 16 months post-disgorgement aging (something Bruno insists on). Disgorged in March 2020 with a typically low dosage of 4.5g/litre. This has a beguiling aromatic nose with some honey, marzipan, nut and toast, but leaving room for the vibrant fruity notes of cherry, apple and lemon. There’s lovely acidity on the palate that isn’t obscured by too much dosage, and it breathes life into the cherry, table grape and lemony fruit, with some orange peel and almond nuts, as well as a tapering lemony finish with a hint of seaweed and oyster shell. Complex, covering lots of different layers of the flavour spectrum, finishing assertive and bright. A serious effort.
