A house favorite, Andosol draws inspiration from the historic field blends of California. The nuances in this wine pay homage to European principles of winemaking, while expressing familiar traits often found in the new world. Each year this cuvée is crafted to best express the unique mountain terroir comprised of volcanic rock and ash formed in the Miocene era almost five million years ago. Undoubtedly, this site and the inherent stress it lends to grape growing saturates the grapes with intensity and depth. The nutrient-rich volcanic soils and rugged site of the vineyards lend vibrancy to this mountain Zinfandel. A unique perspective of the Ink Grade Estate, this polished and bold wine is meant to be enjoyed in its youth but will also age incredibly well.

The Andosol contains floral aromas including lilacs and roses, with ripe black cherries and strawberries and a note of pink peppercorn that lingers on the palate. The volcanic soils offer a distinctive iron and tar aromatic flavor married with the fine tannin and acid tension, expressing a profile akin to a cru Barolo.

The varying and distinctive landscape of the vineyard parcels included in this Cabernet Sauvignon allow for something very complex to come together. With balance across the board, the fruit from the unique parcels each occupy a certain piece of terrain covering much of the Napa Valley with variations in slope and elevation. Incorporating a portion of Howell Mountain Cabernet, the blending notes of this wine are phenomenal with base notes, high notes, and incredible breadth.

The Ink Grade Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a nose of fresh cassis, pomegranate, and cocoa with elements of thyme, mint, candied orange peels, nutmeg, cloves, and paprika. The palate is linear throughout with a consistent midpalate of bright and lifted acidity and well-integrated raw mountain tannins that close in a persistent finish.

The grapes are pressed and the juice undergoes active maceration on the lees for five days at 5 to 8°C. This helps to release and preserve as many of the aroma precursors in the skins as possible, which will later reveal the typical aromas of the Sauvignon Blanc grape when they come into contact with native yeast. On fine lees in vats and eggs. This helps prevent oxidation of the wine’s aromas and adds richness, body and complexity on the palate.

A pale, bright yellow colour with some touches of green. White peach and mint aromas come through first on the nose, then mingle with lemony touches. Elegant on the palate with beautiful balance between a soft attack and a lingering, mouth-watering mineral finish.

Aged mostly in neutral French oak barrels (15 percent were new), this developed a textural grace without the weight of oak tannins, feeling airy in its richness. This Pinot Noir has a bright cherry colour that is complimented by a lifted and complex aroma. Wild violets, dark cherries, pencil shavings and earthy notes bust out of the glass. The palate is deep with blackcurrants and spice being balanced by gentle tannins and clean acidity. Given time in the glass it develops more savoury notes and a softer texture showing the layers to the wine. It is drinking very well now but will continue to develop over the next 10 years.

Winemaker Notes

Two new vineyard sources are at the core of this blend. From alluvial soils slightly further inland than our West Sonoma Coast Estate, young vine Old Wente and old vine Clone 4 combine to capture the essence of how we, at Ernest, view Chardonnay. Ripening earlier in the season, these grapes are picked with the acid still very intact but with full physiological ripeness. The old vines giving us full pear and ripe apples notes while the Old Wente drives the palate with minerality and verve. Native fermentations in 228L French Oak barrels, 25% of which are new, this wine was bottled after 10 months on the lees, and a light filtration.

A bright canary yellow wine with clear and luscious golden hues. The fruit notes are reminiscent of Asian pears and loquats with hints of sour unripe pineapples. The minerality is also up-front with nuances of ocean air, wet sands, and oyster shells. For Burgundy lovers, this Chardonnay has the subtlety of flavors and exuberance of acidity and terroir. This is without a doubt a “wine of place” our newest AVA - the maritime-influenced 'West Sonoma Coast'.

Winemaker Notes

The Seggio river is the largest watercourse in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci. Its source is up in Sassetta’s metalliferous hills, an area that was already well known in the Etruscan period and is extremely rich in underground deposits of ferrous minerals. It cuts across the entire area of Bolgheri and its alluvial debris enrich the characteristic clay soils with precious large pebbles, thus ensuring excellent drainage of the soil. This Bolgheri Rosso is produced with the typical varietals, Merlot 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and Petit Verdot 10%, carefully harvested and vinified to ensure density and concentration but also creating a very fresh and easy-drinking style of wine. In the glass, one can immediately grasp the impassioned enthusiasm and attention to the detail that we dedicate to this wine, which makes its debut with vintage 2014.

Intense ruby red in color. The nose offers nice fresh and crunchy fruit, enriched with mineral and spicy notes. The palate is medium bodied with red berry notes. The tannins are elegant, silky, enveloping and very soft. The finish is precise, clean and lively.

We love the Touraine rouge cuvée wines from the Loire that are typically served as bistro wines in Paris, and refer to them as inspiration for our “Béton” blend. The wines we enjoyed many years ago while training in France were the inspiration for the Béton cuvée. We attribute the success of our red blend, now in it's ninth vintage, to the desire of so many to have an intriguing and food friendly, yet never overly heavy or boozy red wine as a mainstay at the dinner table. Not the biggest white wine cuvée at Maison Champy at only 25 barrels, but this 1ha parcel planted in the 1970s has produced a very stylish, saline, focused Chardonnay in the heat of 2018, with sweet vanilla-spicy oak, subtle gunflint aromas and a core of fresh, tangy, citrus and lime fruit.

Winemaker Notes

These vineyards cover the hilly slopes of Aloxe-Corton and Savigny-lès-Beaune. There are only four Premier Crus Pinot Noirs: “Les Fichots”, “En Caradeux”, “Creux de la Net”, “Iles des Hautes et Basses Vergelesses”. This wine is aged in a 350-barrel and a 228-litre used barrel. The wine is open and intense on the nose with notes of orange and grapefruit. The attack is fresh and supple. A well-balanced and concentrated wine with good mineral length on the finish.

The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA. It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California. This ancient, dry farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. As a result of the vine age and miniscule yield, this wine is dark and intense. White flowers, dried orange peel, and a windswept garrigue of black tea, fig cake and Luxardo cherry floods the nose. A long wall of amaro-like texture fills the mouth, yet the feel is light and lively, and the finish is clean. Delicious with hearty fare now, and built to age.

Known for giving body and structure to Pommard’s Clos Marey-Monge Monopole, the Grands Esprits plot makes Pommard of great quality and structure. The 4.81-hectare plot of Grands Esprits has large, round, rocky, limestone-rich soils planted between 1970 and 1980. It produces a straight Pinot Noir with firm tannins and potential for long aging. Occupying almost one-quarter of our vineyard’s overall area, the 220 rows of Grands Esprits is the most calcareous area in the Clos Marey-Monge. Hand-harvested organic grapes, hand-sorted on a vibrating table. 20% whole-cluster. Placed into stainless steel fermentation vats by gravity flow. Weeks-long maceration, minimal pumping-over and punching-down. Pressing in pneumatic press. Aged 18 months in 25% new French oak barrels on fine lees.

The Grands Esprits has the highest limestone content of all the plots of Clos Marey-Monge and this supple, silky Pinot Noir with vibrant acidity and firm, angular tannins is a fantastic representation of this terroir. Red cherry and raspberry flavors are intensely ripe yet zesty, accented by tangs of tart blood orange and a deep granitic undertone. Approachable young, the wine is likely to improve through 2035 and hold further still.

Only produced in select vintages when growing conditions are deemed exceptional, this is one of the most coveted bottles in Italian wine. The Quintarelli Giuseppe 2011 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Riserva represents the last vintage seen by Bepi himself. Giuseppe Quintarelli died in January 2012 at age 84 following his struggle with Parkinson's disease. There's magic in this wine, and we raise a glass to the master of Negrar. It delivers elegant class and concentration, fruit freshness and the power (plus 16.5% alcohol) that comes with appassimento. It's an ethereal wine from a hot and dry vintage. There are many contradictions within the bottle, but it ultimately settles on a place of balance and beauty. I opened bottle number 1,443 of only 5,726 released. Drink: 2025-2060

 

Giuseppe established the winery as the source of the most traditional styles of Amarone, ageing it for seven years in Slavonian oak; the result is one of the most complex wines produced in Italy. Quintarelli wines are still the unmatched benchmark for Amarone. Even though he is traditional in his Amarone production, it does not follow that Giuseppe is afraid of innovation.

A pure, balanced and fresh Napa cabernet that is not just showing heady concentration and dark fruit. Here you get some violets, nimble flowers, redcurrants, graphite and fine spices. Some oranges, too. Fragrant and nuanced. Medium to full body with tight yet refined tannins. Rather linear, tense and elegant, but lacking neither power nor definition. Better to give it a few years to deliver more complexity.
