Chardonnay Lover 2.0

Chardonnay may have gotten a lot of flack over the last few years, being derided as a clunky, over the top and hard to enjoy variety of wine. While the spotlight may have expanded a little bit to include a new slate of white grape varieties, Chardonnay producers have continued to toil away behind the scenes and truthfully, the wines have never been better! A whole slew of different styles of Chardonnay are being made around the world and this is a great chance to sample some old classics and new emerging favourites. There’s wines in here for everyone, even some choices that may even win over the ‘anything-but-Chardonnay’ crowd. And even if they don’t… More for the rest of us!

This is a 6-pack. This case contains 1 bottle of each wine:

Maison Champy 2018 Pernand Vergelesses // Burgundy, France

Burghound

Smoky aromas of citrus rind and white flowers lead to racy, intense and appealingly textured flavors that ooze a subtle bead of minerality on the nicely voluminous, rich and sneaky long finish. This too should drink well shortly after its release.

91 Points, Tim Atkin

Camille Giroud 2018 Auxey‐Duresses // Burgundy, France

“Camille Giroud has been transformed in recent years and is now the most exciting of the smaller négociants in Burgundy.” – Clive Coates, The Wines of Burgundy

Burghound

A whiff of matchstick character can be found on the equally pretty and ripe assortment of white orchard fruit and floral scents. As is usually the case there is a bit more size, weight and richness to the attractively textured middle weight flavors that are less refined but do offer solid depth on the citrusy and very dry finale. This isn't an elegant Auxey blanc, but I like the frank character and delivery.

Neudorf 2019 Mouton Chardonnay // Nelson, New Zealand

94 Points, Wine Advocate

One of New Zealand's most consistently reliable, top-notch Chardonnays, the 2019 Home Block Moutere Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 1978. Barrel fermented and aged in 15% new French oak, it offers up scents of toasted grain and baking spices but backs those with impressively concentrated notes of white peach, pineapple, pear and lime. Those elements all merge seamlessly on the medium-bodied palate, which is plump and generous yet streamlined, with terrific line and length on the silky-textured finish

Craggy Range 2018 Le Beaux Caillou // Hawke's Bay, New Zealand

2017 Review (Previous Vintage) 93 Points via Rebecca Gibb MW)

An expansive Chardonnay offering sympathetic hazelnut-like oak, high concentration of fruit and a burst of fine acidity and savoury hints on the finish. A delight to see Les Beaux Cailloux back after leaf-roll virus laid waste to the original vineyards. You'll need to wait to see it return to true greatness but this vintage shows it's well on its way.

Joseph Phelps 2018 Chardonnay Freestone Vineyard // Sonoma, Cali, USA

95 Points, Virginie Boone (Wine Enthusiast)

From estate-grown grapes, this impressively layered, complex and cool-climate characteristic white is layered in gravelly texture and crushed rock. Briny ocean influence coats a crisp core of green apple and Meyer lemon, leading to a complete finish.

Tolpuddle 2019 Chardonnay // Tasmania, Australia

94 Points, Christina Pickard (Wine Enthusiast)

Tolpuddle has quickly risen in the ranks to become one of Australia’s most renowned single vineyards. The Chard is a rich, polished style that won’t be for everyone, but is still all class. Reductive notes of oyster shell and gun flint perch neatly beside baked apple, nougat and high-end oak on the nose. The palate carries out the nose’s promises of richness albeit with a good deal of refreshment. (This is cool climate territory after all.). Sleek, slippery and made for the long haul (drink until 2036, at least), this is a nod to Burgundy with Tassie roots.
