Telmo Teaser

A quality revolution has been unfolding in Spain over the past several decades. It has many integral figures but few are as prolific and influential as Telmo Rodriguez. Telmo’s commitment to modernizing the Spanish wine industry while still paying respect to its great tradition and heritage has helped usher in a whole new wave of quality-oriented winemaking across the country.

"I am not a flying winemaker,” Rodriguez says, “I'm a driving winemaker." In addition to his family-owned property in Rioja (where his involvement has elevated the already reputable estate) Telmo has spent the last couple decades traveling the back roads of Spain seeking out the old, the gnarly, and the exceptional, breathing new life into forgotten vineyards and rediscovering native Spanish varietals. He is a champion of ancient bush vines, of biodynamic farming, and most especially, of terroir-driven wines that showcase Spain's great diversity of wine regions and styles.

This mixed case of 4 bottles offers a sample of several different bottlings made across Spain, and a great taste of its potential.

Each case contains 1 bottle of each wine listed below:

Telmo Rodríguez 2020 Basa // Rueda, Spain

Basa is Telmo’s entry level white wine, made from Verdejo and Viura grapes in the Rueda DO, about two hours northwest of Madrid. The region is famous for fresh white wines made from Verdejo and this is a fitting example. The name comes from the 40-year-old 'baso' or bush-trained vines that are planted on limestone-rich soils at over 700-meters elevation on a plateau along the Duero River. The vineyard is farmed organically, and fermentation is carried out spontaneously with native yeast. Expect a fresh, fruit driven white wine with just the right balance between charming fruit and aromatic complexity.

Telmo Rodríguez 2019 Gaba do Xil Godello // Valdeorras, Spain

This is the white wine from Telmo’s Gaba do Xil project in Galicia. The rocky, terraced vineyards are famously difficult to farm, but Telmo and many others believe that this ancient soil and harsh terrain offer a unique combination of factors that produce wines like no others. Made with 100% Godello from high elevation vineyards that have been organically farmed, with fermentation by indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel tanks, this is a more serious white for those who enjoy minerality and complexity in their wines.

94 Points, James Suckling

This is so intense, showing bright, tangy acidity with incredible minerality, as well as sliced green apple and white pineapple. Medium body. Acidity-driven. Zingy and zesty, Drink now.

Telmo Rodríguez 2019 Gaba do Xil Mencia  // Valdeorras, Spain

Telmo’s red wine, once again from Galicia, is a red that shows the character of the stony hills and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a red wine made of 100% Mencia, a Spanish varietal found scattered through the country’s northwest. The vineyards are organically farmed, and the fruit is fermented again in stainless steel in order to maintain freshness, and using indigenous yeasts. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is on full display, with its moderating influence playing its part in bringing balance to the wine. While it is ripe and full bodied, much like its white counterpart, this is vibrant and focussed, with no shortage of complexity and minerality.

91 Points, James Suckling

Lots of dark berries with spice and rust character. It’s medium-bodied with dark fruit and pepper. Drink now.

Bodega Lanzaga 2020 LZ // Rioja, Spain

Lastly, from Rioja comes this red based on the classic grapes of the region: Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano. These varieties are used to create an homage to the history of the grape farmers of the region; they are sourced from high elevation plateaus that are organically farmed, showcasing the famously complex Rioja terroir. Grapes are hand-harvested and once again fermented with native yeasts, this time in concrete tanks. The resulting wine is fruity and generous, but not lacking in freshness and drinkability.

92 Points, James Suckling

This is a fresh, easy red with cherry, berry and orange peel. Medium body. Bright acidity. Easy and bright. No wood. Concrete. Tempranillo and garnacha. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.
