Camille Giroud is one of the most dynamic négociants in Burgundy. Giroud founded his small négociant firm back in 1865 and about a century later, the company was still being run by his daughter-in-law and their children. At the time, the aim was to obtain grapes from the best vineyard sites and then age them in heavily seasoned barrels, only releasing them once fully matured; these wines were known for being heavy and tannic.
Then, for over two decades, David Croix transformed Maison Giroud: he elevated the brand by producing more refined, contemporary expressions of Burgundy. Croix focused on lower yields, riper grapes and creating wines with vibrant personality and softer tannins. Since 2016, these high quality, joyous and modern wines have been made by Carel Voorhuis.
Maison Camille Giroud is a true négociant, with only 2.7 acres of its own under vine. It’s become known as a dependable source of Burgundy that delivers the best of both worlds — wines that are matured and traditional in style, as well as younger wines that beautifully communicate their terroir.
The grapes from this wine come from 1.58 acres. The vines are approx. 45 years old, 250m meters in altitude and grown in deep clay soil with Jurassic limestone substrate. The grapes are 100% destemmed, undergo indigenous yeast fermentation in open tanks with punch-downs and pump-overs daily. The wine is aged for 18 months in barrel (15-30% of which is new oak), undergoes 3 months of blending in stainless steel then is bottled.
2018 is a vintage of pleasure. Very ripe and fresh on the nose with plum and red and dark berries. On the palate, medium-bodied, juicy, vibrant and with a seductive texture backed up with a firm, serious finish.
