Cozy Reds

There's nothing more cozy than a warming red. This pack brings together three wines that are Bordeaux-blend adjacent — they're made with a few grape varieties that have been blended to achieve a sense of place and harmony, they have interwinding flavours: fruit purity but with well-integrated woody notes from barrel-aging (think hints of baking spice and vanilla). These wines know what they are and they communicate it well.

This is a 6-pack. This case contains 2 bottles of each wine:

Antoine Moueix 2018 Château Tour de Capet // Bordeaux, France

Winemaker Notes

Vinified within Château Capet Guillier, Château Tour de Capet enjoys its own unique terroir, lending the wine identity and character. The sandy-silt soil produces wines of great finesse, which draw character from the well-balanced structure and round-bodied nature of Merlot. Wine is vinified in concrete vats then aged in French oak barrels: 1/3 in new barrels, 1/3 in one-wine barrels, 1/3 in two-wine barrels for 12 months.

Purple in colour, the nose reveals aromas of crisp black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry) and spice (cinnamon, vanilla, cloves). The palate is supple and silky, with black fruit and spices, medium acidity and fine, silky tannins. The finish is pleasant.

Cullen 2018 Red Moon // Margaret River, Australia

91 Points, Decanter

First violet and white pepper-edged blackberry, then sappier apple notes, and finally on opening up, sweeter blueberry fruit. Malbec accounts for the deep hue and this wine’s signature juicy vitality. Petit Verdot’s small berries add light grip to otherwise discreet, gravelly tannins. Only 57% of the wine is aged in seasoned French oak, accentuating the fruit purity.

Winemaker Notes

A Red Moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when the light filtering through the Earth’s atmosphere dapples the moon in red light. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurred on the 11th of February 2017 during harvest. Fruit from the Mangan Vineyard was hand-harvested, fermented naturally and basket pressed to French oak.

Cullen Wines have been very successful in meeting their aim of producing a wine which, while fruit-driven, is of such high quality that it will develop for several years under good cellaring conditions. This wine was made from a carefully selected blend of Malbec and Petit Verdot grown on the Mangan Vineyard, which has been shown to be ideally suited to nurturing these grape varieties.

Boschendal 2017 Nicolas Bordeaux Blend // Stellenbosch, South Africa

Winemaker Notes

Nicolas is a blend brimming with character, each component – outstanding in its own right – together creates something exceptional. Shiraz, a signature variety for Boschendal, adds intrigue and depth with intriguing spicy notes, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot give classical structure, Malbec a beautiful deep colour and vibrant red fruit, while the Merlot enhances the fruit profile and Cabernet Franc elaborates on the spicy richness of the Shiraz.

Upon arrival at the cellar, bunches are carefully hand sorted to ensure that any green berries are discarded. The respective cultivars are vinified separately and treated very gently throughout the winemaking process to obtain the wine’s signature classical elegance. Primary and malolactic fermentation take place in stainless steel tanks before wines are matured in fine French oak barrels for 16 months. These consist of 20% new wood, and the rest a combination of second, third and fourth fill barrels. After the meticulous tasting of the respective wines, the final blend is assembled and bottled.
