Staglin Cabernet Sauvignon: Mixed Vertical

Staglin’s story starts in 1985, when the historic vineyard tucked away in Rutherford was purchased by Garen and Shari Staglin. The property had already developed a reputation for quality wines and was well known among Napa Valley cognoscenti such as Andre Tchelitscheff, who worked on converting the estate into a vineyard. But it was the Staglins who would turn it into what it is today.

The Staglins committed to running the estate with a quality-first mindset. Their small, 51 acres of vineyard are planted in prime land in the Rutherford AVA of Napa Valley and the land and facility are treated with the utmost care and respect. The estate adopted organic farming practices early, and the winery itself is solar-powered. All their wines are made with estate-grown fruit that is vinified on site, except for a small amount of Chardonnay that is purchased.

Production is small, and these are wines that are held in high regard by critics, with scores above 90 points in the norm, and scores of 95 points and above not being unusual. This mixed case is a rare opportunity to own several top-rated vintages of what is quickly becoming an icon of Napa Valley.

Each case contains 1 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from each vintage:

Staglin 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon // Rutherford California
Blend: 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot

94 Points, Robert Parker

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate has a very pretty nose of fragrant earth, red and black currants, black plums and underbrush with hints of cigar box and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the mouth with expressive earth and black fruit flavors, supported by a seamless backbone of ripe tannins and great freshness, finishing long.

2014 Vintage Notes

2014 was another fantastic growing season. After one of the warmest and driest winters on record, as expected, budbreak was early, even earlier than 2013. Though offset by judiciously timed February rains, the continued drought conditions limited vigor in the vines, promoting balanced and compact growth along with generally smaller-sized berries. Even with a “normally” timed harvest window, because of the early budbreak, we benefitted from an extended hang time, which allowed for an even and complete maturity of the decently sizable crop.

Staglin 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon // Rutherford, California
Blend: 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot

97 Points, Robert Parker

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate bursts out of the glass with beautiful black cherry compote, warm cassis and freshly crushed blackberries scents plus touches of chargrill, violets, dark chocolate and pencil shavings and a waft of English lavender. Full-bodied, the palate features great intensity combined with fantastic freshness, textured by soft, finely grained tannins and lifted by the most gorgeous floral perfume, finishing long and layered. Beautiful wine.

2016 Vintage Notes

2016 was yet another superb growing season that began with a warm and dry winter in what has become our extended drought which lead to what has now become the normal ‘early’ budbreak which was again supported by fortuitously timed February rains. A relatively hot early season and start to summer pushed the pace and the expectation of an early harvest but a significant cooling shift occurred at the end of July, tapping the brakes enough for a more extended hang time allowing increased flavor development and a slightly later than expected start to the harvest.

Staglin 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon // Rutherford, California
Blend: 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot

94 Points, James Suckling

Plenty of blueberry, blackcurrant, spearmint and mint aromas. Medium body and extremely fine tannins. Firm and toned. Really subtle and racy. Refined and focused. Restrained. This is very polished. Fresh. Want to drink it now, but a couple of years will help. Drink after 2022.

2017 Vintage Notes

2017 was a growing season for the record books – from drought-ending winter rains to late summer heat events. The wettest winter in almost two decades along with the extended dormancy of a decently cold winter allowed the vines to rest and recover from a 5 year stretch of abundant activity and gave us a later than typical budbreak. Though the late spring and early summer were defined by peaks and valleys compared to other ‘goldilocks’ years which enjoyed less varied conditions, we had a well-managed crop that handled the overall warm growing conditions beautifully.
