Telmo Rodriguez: Tour of Spain

Telmo Rodriguez is one of Spain’s star winemakers. He is committed to making real Spanish wine — that means using native Spanish grapes grown on soil from every corner of the country to show off its incredible diversity.  Telmo Rodriguez has said, "I am not a flying winemaker — I'm a driving winemaker." He has spent the last couple decades traveling the back roads of Spain seeking out the old, the gnarly and the exceptional, breathing new life into native Spanish varietals and forgotten vineyards. He is a champion of ancient bush vines, of biodynamic farming, and most especially, of terroir-driven wines that showcase Spain's great diversity of wine regions and styles. Telmo Rodriguez is globally synonymous with high quality Spanish wines at all price points and these bargain bottles certainly demonstrate this.

Each case contains 3 bottles of each wine listed below:

Name: Telmo Rodríguez Basa 2019
Region: RUEDO DO
Country: SPAIN

Basa is made from indigenous Spanish grapes about two hours northwest of Madrid. The Rueda DO produces some of the best-known whites in the country, made predominantly from Verdejo.  It was the first wine ever produced at Compañia Telmo Rodriguez. The name comes from the 40-year old 'baso' or bush-trained vines that are planted on limestone-rich soils at over 700-meters elevation on a plateau along the Duero river. Farming is organic and fermentation is done using native yeast.

This wine is bursting with personality. It has notes of lime, peach, pear, jasmine, and fennel. The palate is round and fruity but with a firm line of acidity keeping everything in balance. Juicy, crisp, and with a hint of floral.

Name: Telmo Rodríguez Gaba do Xil Godello 2019
Country: SPAIN

This wine is 100% Godello, a grape native to Galicia (the north-western part of  Spain set beside the Atlantic. This wine is part of Telmo's Gabo do Xil project. The fruit is grown on steep vineyards, 500m in altitude. The proximity of the Atlantic certainly impacts this wine
— it's citrus and mineral driven, fresh and vibrant.

92 Points, James Suckling
A fruity white with sliced apple, honey and some pear undertones. It’s medium-bodied with tangy fruit and a flavorful finish. Some dried pineapple and honey at the end. Drink now.

Name: Telmo Rodríguez Gaba do Xil Mencia 2018
Country: SPAIN

This Mencia is also from Valdeorras, the Atlantic-influenced region in the northwest known for producing spicy reds from the grape (as well as mineral whites from Godello, such as the above). This ‘Gaba do Xil’ is made using grapes from old bush-trained vines on granitic terraces that produce low yields. It is fermented using indigenous yeasts in stainless steel, where it then matured for 12 months before bottling.

94 Points, James Suckling
The blue fruit, crushed white pepper, cloves and slate are mind-blowing on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins and a refined, polished finish. Drink or hold.

Name: Telmo Rodríguez LZ
Country: SPAIN

This wine grows on limestone-rich slopes, 500-700m in altitude. The grapes are hand picked, fermentation takes place via native yeasts and the wine is aged for 6 months in concrete.

94 Points, James Suckling
Very pretty and aromatic with plum and orange peel with floral undertones. Medium to full body, with very fine tannins and a beautiful, fine-grained finish. Drinkable now, but a year or two will real show it off. From organically grown grapes. Drink after 2022.
