Toronto Star: Carolyn’s Picks

This 6-pack includes one bottle of each wine:

Tawse 2019 Sketches of Niagara Rosé / VQA Niagara Peninsula, Canada

Score: 91
Vintages Essential: 172643, $17.95

This sunlit, fruit-laden stunner slips in with a crisp crush of raspberry and strawberry-scented goodness, tastes dry, and lingers with a lime zest. It’s just the wine you’ll want to chill with when the mercury rises.

Domaine Laroche 2019 Chablis St Martin / Chablis, France

Score: 92
LCBO: 289124, $25.80

Domaine Laroche is a respected producer in the Chablis region known for its bone-dry, wet-stone-scented whites shot through with shimmering acidity. The latest vintage of this wine is fabulous — glossy and cool tasting with allusions of lemon zest, green apple, salt and stone as well as whispers of chalk and cool steel. Light, bright and full of finesse, this wine is fabulous, despite a challenging vintage that saw frost, hail, drought and a heat wave wreak havoc on the region.

Boschendal 2019 “1685” Chardonnay / Western Cape, South Africa

Score: 91
Vintages Essential: 367698, $16.95

This full-bodied expression of wooded Chardonnay calls to mind fresh-from-the-oven apple crumble on the nose and palate. It’s dry-tasting and pure with lift and purity. Then it tapers to a short but clean finish that makes you want to keep sipping for more of the same.

Ascheri 2019 Langhe DOC Barbera / Piedmont, Italy

Score: 92
LCBO: 219790, $14.70

From its complex and compelling fragrance of damsons, violet and graphite to its bright and beautiful sweep of flavours, this wine made from the humble Barbera grape is undervalued. Upon entry, the flavours fan out to include dry earth and mineral tones as well as a touch of tobacco and rye bread to offer a brilliant Old World glass of wine at a bargain price.

Carmen 2018 Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon Single Vineyard / Maipo, Chile

Score: 93
LCBO: 358309, $16.95

This bold, classy-tasting red opens with generosity on the nose — cassis and chocolate mostly — before erupting with intensity on the palate. Packed with flavours of muddled blackberries, roasted plum and a drizzle of blackcurrant liqueur, this Chilean red offers immediate pleasure. Then the tastes shift to reveal a dusting of baking spices and delicate touch of black pepper that persist on the finish.

Faustino 2010 I Gran Reserva
/ Rioja, Spain

Score: 89
Vintages Essential: 976662, $31.95

This 11-year-old, Tempranillo-based blend that spent about two years in American oak and time in bottle before release is drinking well right now.  In the glass, it’s a youthful ruby colour and teems with scents of cherries in brandy and chopped walnuts. On the palate, the wine is smooth upon entry and rich with sundrenched cherries and plums laced with walnut and cola. The structure is balanced but firm with grippy, drying tannins underpinning the fruit. Each sip tapers to a long black olive and walnut finish.
