MEERLUST

Established in 1692, Meerlust Estate is one of the oldest and most historic wineries in South Africa. Hannes Myburgh’s family purchased the land back in 1756 and today he is the 8th generation to run the estate. Through most of its history, Meerlust was known for producing sweet white wines, which were popular at that time (and were also used as a medicine for sailors to combat scurvy). Things changed however when Hannes travelled to Bordeaux and Burgundy and fell in love with the wines of the region. He returned to South Africa and replanted all the vines becoming a pioneer producer of Bordeaux varietals in the Cape in the late 1970’s. Today the estate produces exceptional wines of complexity and character including their flagship “Rubicon”, one of the Cape's greatest red wines.
