Basa is made from Verdejo and Viura grapes in the Rueda DO, about two hours northwest of Madrid. The region is famous for fresh white wines made from Verdejo and this is a fitting example. The name comes from the 40-year-old 'baso' or bush-trained vines that are planted on limestone-rich soils at over 700-meters elevation on a plateau along the Duero River. The vineyard is farmed organically, and fermentation is carried out spontaneously with native yeast. Expect a fresh, fruit-driven white wine with just the right balance between charming fruit and aromatic complexity.

The 2020 LZ comes from an early harvest after a warm year not without challenges (mildew). The Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano grapes come from their own organically farmed vineyards and fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts for 15 days; the wine matured in concrete for six to seven months before bottling. It's very primary and has notes of licorice and a juicy texture. Pablo Eguzkiza was telling me he likes 2020 better than 2019. The wine shows very good balance and fine, round tannins.

The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is on full display, with its moderating influence playing its part in bringing balance to this wine. While it is ripe and full bodied, much like its white counterpart, this is vibrant and focussed, with no shortage of complexity and minerality.

Telmo’s red wine, once again from Galicia, is a red that shows the character of the stony hills and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a red wine made of 100% Mencia, a Spanish varietal found scattered through the country’s northwest. The vineyards are organically farmed, and the fruit is fermented again in stainless steel in order to maintain freshness, and using indigenous yeasts.

Telmo Rodríguez’s journey through Spain reviving and recuperating vineyards has led him to work with 43 different varieties. Although established in Rioja, he has also put Málaga back on the map and worked with Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, as well as establishing wineries in other regions. This is the white wine from Telmo’s Gaba do Xil project in Galicia. It hails from Valdeorras (“Valley of Gold”) in eastern Galicia, a region once famous for gold mining and now best known for its unique and complex wines made from the indigenous Godello grape.

 

The rocky, terraced vineyards are famously difficult to farm, but Telmo and many others believe that this ancient soil and harsh terrain offer a unique combination of factors that produce wines like no others. Made with 100% Godello from high elevation vineyards that have been organically farmed, with fermentation by indigenous yeasts, in stainless steel witanks, this is a more serious white for those who enjoy minerality and complexity in their wines.

The wine is named for the river Sil that flows through the region (Xil is its ancient name, used by the Celtic people who once inhabited the area). Many of the river’s tributaries are flanked on either side by vineyards, planted in terraces on steep slate hillsides. The label displays a dozen bridges, symbolizing the idea of crossing from one vineyard plot to another.

A fantastically pleasant, delicate, and accessible wine from the Sierra de Gredos, produced using old organic Garnacha vines. The slate and granite soils blend together, giving this wine depth and fruity character.

2019 was a warm and challenging year with frost in March, hail in the summer and rains close to the harvest date in Gredos. The 2019 Pegaso Zeta was produced with old vine Garnacha on granite and schist soils; it fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak and stainless steel vats and amphorae, and it matured in a combination of 500- and 600-liter barrels, amphorae and stainless steel for 12 months. It's aromatic and expressive, with red fruit and herbs and unnoticeable oak. It's round and juicy, powerful and balanced with some grainy tannins. It's a wine that should do very well with food. 17,021 bottles produced. It was bottled in August 2020.

Lanzaga is the backbone of our project, the identity, the purest expression of our work in Lanciego. Made only from a selection of the best grapes from our own organic vineyards, Lanzaga brings together all the elements of our way of work; respect of the place, bush pruning, field blend, organic viticulture, concrete fermentation, aging in foudres and barrels of different sizes and origins, keeping always a limited production of human size. The result is a rich and complex expression of the village of Lanciego; a Rioja wine with a true sense of place; a serious and sophisticated wine that ages wonderfully.

Viña Echeverria - Sauvignon Blanc Reserva - 2024

This vibrant and pristine Sauvignon Blanc combines grassy aromas of fresh herbs and green pepper, with citric notes of grapefruit and lime. The palate is fresh and crisp, with a natural balanced acidity and a fruity finish.

 

Famiglia Cotarella - Falesco Le Poggere Bianco Est! Est!! Est!!! - 2024

This wine is from the northwest part of Lazio, near the border with Umbria. A blend of three native grapes. It has refreshing lemon and green apple notes, some minerally sensations and a little breadiness. On the palate, it's refreshing, citric and savoury with lots of bright acidity.

Bruce Jack Pinotage Malbec - 2024

Many believe the best Pinotage in the world comes from the Breedekloof Valley. It is certainly one of the most awarded varieties from this area. We love the fresh, intense cherry and dark chocolate aromas. The juicy soft palate is framed by warming vanilla and touch of oak. 

 

Rivera Salento Primitivo - 2023

Primitivo is today one of the most renowned grape varieties, known for producing wines with intense, fruity, and smooth character. Rivera interprets this variety in a fresh and flowing style, using modern winemaking techniques that highlight its hallmark aromas of jammy black fruit.

 

Viña Carmen - Maria´s Legacy - 2022

Dark roasted coffee, black currant, and graphite. Jasmine and Lavendar perfume dark chocolate raspberry. Velvet tannins are surrounded by white-peppered cedar. Hints of aromatic herbs introduce this full-bodied Cabernet. Earthy notes and licourice enhance the rich berry jam flavours that complement the smooth and approachable palate.

Bibich - CRNO - 2022

Herbal, aromas chocolate, cherry, sage, immortelle. Dark forest fruits with hints of cracked pepper and graphite. Medium body with a longer finish and hints of minerality. A smooth mouthfeel with a silky layer of soft tannin will have you reaching for more.

 

Château La Vaisinerie - Puisseguin Saint-Emilion - 2016

Chateau La Vaisinerie has a subtle, complex bouquet of red berry fruit, sage and rose petals, leading to a long, tobacco-tinged finish. Aromas of blackberries, sweet tobacco and some crushed stones follow through to a medium body with a pretty core of fruit and well-integrated tannins. Drink after 2024.

Duas Quintas embodies the precision, freshness and richness of the wines from this iconic Douro still wine producer. Duas Quintas Red is a wine from the region of Douro Superior, more specifically from Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta dos Bons Ares, and is a blend of traditional grape varieties that expresses the potential of this most extreme region. 

 

Cafaggio - Chianti Classico DOCG - 2023

Villa Cafaggio produces a Chianti Classico made exclusively with Sangiovese grapes. Bright ruby colour, with garnet and deeply vinous. The taste is dry, fruity tending over time to the soft velvet. Flavours include violet and spice layered atop juicy cherry. Tannins and structure increase with quality, but reflect fruit and terroir rather than oak

 

Allan Scott - Base Pinot Noir

The Scott Base Pinot Noir exhibits classic Central Otago aromatics of ripe cherries, raspberries and wild thyme. A superbly textural wine with lovely clarity, minerality and line. There's honey, wattle and crunchy gravel soil twitched up with a bunch of wild herbs. The palate has good body but lengthens beautifully, phenolics are both constructive and controlled and the whole thing is beguiling and gently expansive (but not insistent). This wine stands out for its elegance and harmony, making it an excellent choice for those seeking a white wine with personality and freshness.

Branco de Santa Cruz is based on a little organic vineyard beneath the Valdeorras village of Santa Cruz. A Coroa is in fact the bottom part of the vineyard which gives us Telmo’s extraordinary heritage Parcela Mencia, ‘As Caborcas’. The lower ¼ of the terraces of this hill are planted to Godello in a very cool aspect facing north-west, while the upper reaches are a field blend of Mencia and other local red cultivars. (this photo is taken from the bottom of the vineyard, so you can see the Godello terraces in foreground, and the lower reaches of the Mencia-planted upper section.)

Telmo has spent many years restoring these old vines. While we call it ‘Godello’, this is a typical heritage planting of old bush-vine field-blend gear, mainly Godello with Loureiro, Doña Blanca, Palomino and others mixed in. Grown at 500 metres’ altitude, an indigenous yeast fermentation is followed by 12 months’ maturation in neutral old wooden vats. The wine is labelled Branco de Santa Cruz, since it is a village wine with some other parcels around the valley supplementing the fruit from A Coroa.
