The Chardonnays bring to this wine a refreshing finish with notes of citrus fruits and pepper.

 

Every year, Billecart-Salmon vinifies base wines from a greater number of parcels than it actually needs for the production of its main cuvées. The tasting Committee tastes each of these base wines and selects only the ones that match the standard and the style of Billecart-Salmon. Some of the wines that are not selected are bottled to be part of a second wine from the House, Inspiration 1818.

They expand to full force on the palate and fill the mouth with their mellow goodness, supported in this by rich notes of shortbread and wonderful lemon freshness. The bubbles are creamy and disperse the lovely flavors to great effect. This is classy and delicious.

The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is on full display, with its moderating influence playing its part in bringing balance to this wine. While it is ripe and full bodied, much like its white counterpart, this is vibrant and focussed, with no shortage of complexity and minerality.

Telmo’s red wine, once again from Galicia, is a red that shows the character of the stony hills and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a red wine made of 100% Mencia, a Spanish varietal found scattered through the country’s northwest. The vineyards are organically farmed, and the fruit is fermented again in stainless steel in order to maintain freshness, and using indigenous yeasts.

Telmo Rodríguez’s journey through Spain reviving and recuperating vineyards has led him to work with 43 different varieties. Although established in Rioja, he has also put Málaga back on the map and worked with Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, as well as establishing wineries in other regions. This Mencía is fermented and aged in stainless steel, revealing the variety’s purity. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Forward, juicy aromas. Distinctly individual profile, with dense, succulent fruit and a long, ripe finish. Beth Willard: Pretty nose with tomato vine, sour cherry, floral. Very crunchy, green freshness and just the right amount of grippy tannin. Highly drinkable. Basa is made from Verdejo and Viura grapes in the Rueda DO, about two hours northwest of Madrid. The region is famous for fresh white wines made from Verdejo and this is a fitting example. The name comes from the 40-year-old 'baso' or bush-trained vines that are planted on limestone-rich soils at over 700-meters elevation on a plateau along the Duero River. The vineyard is farmed organically, and fermentation is carried out spontaneously with native yeast. Expect a fresh, fruit-driven white wine with just the right balance between charming fruit and aromatic complexity.

 

91 Points, Vinous (2021 vintage)

Pale, green-tinged yellow. Fresh citrus fruits, succulent herbs and white flowers on the incisive, mineral-accented nose. Taut and energetic on the palate, offering juicy Meyer lemon and green apple flavors that slowly put on weight with air. Finishes on a repeating mineral note, with very good persistence and lingering fennel and lemon pith qualities.

The Kautz family has been promoting and working with sustainable viticulture for over 35 years. This Merlot comes from soils that are sandy loam and well-drained allowing the wonderful ripeness come through to the grapes.

The wine is an intense red with violet tints and aromas of small red fruits. From the Patagonian mountain range, this wine has notes of cassis, raspberry, plum and mint. It is well-balanced, with soft tannins, velvety and very fruity. 

The grapes for this wine come from vineyards in General Roca, Alto Valle de Río Negro, Patagonia. The grapes are harvested manually in 20kg cans during the first week of April. They undergo cold pre-fermentation maceration for 48 hours, alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperature in cement vessels of 9,000 liters capacity for a period of 12 days with periodic pump-overs and de-staging. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged and preserved until bottling. Aging period in the bottle is for 3 months.

Medium-bodied with a delightful pale yellow hue, the 2016 Leaping Horse Vineyards Chardonnay is bright and crisp from start to finish. It has citrus highlights to green apples, pears and tropical fruit aromas and flavors. The finish hints to a bit of lemon zest and a tight minerality that is enjoyable and refreshing. This Chardonnay comes from soils that are sandy loam and well-drained allowing the ripeness to come through to the grapes. The wine spends four months’ aging in new French oak.
