Julien Sunier vinified alongside pioneers of top-notch Gamay (Chauvet, Métras, Lapierre and Foillard) before starting his own business. A follower of organic and natural wines, he likes to remind us that "wine is the memory of grapes" and that we must therefore take care of the soil. This cuvée is a case in point, with obvious fruitiness in a digestible and authentic style. Thirst-quenching Gamay!

The cuvée “Wild Soul”, is an anytime light red wine, unpretentious, with a great freshness and purity, thanks to this fabulous Gamay grapes so aromatic, planted on granitic terroirs. 

Cold, semi-carbonic maceration in fiberglass tank without extraction; vertical press; wild yeast fermentation; no addition of sulfur in vinification or ageing. Ageing on the fine lees in 3000L concrete egg (no oxygen exposure) and in horizontal concrete vats; unfilted; 10 mg of SO2 before bottling.

Sweet and floral scents, in addition to notes of dark forest fruit, pomegranate and tart cherry. Tannin and acidity support and relaunch a drink that runs off with great lightness. Territory that lends elegance to the Sangiovese, a true trademark of Cigliano di Sopra.

Gentle destemming and spontaneous fermentation in mixed containers, light punching down for the duration of fermentation. 14 months in tonneaux and barriques where the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in contact with the fine lees. Before bottling, the wine performs an additional passage in steel.

Basa is made from Verdejo and Viura grapes in the Rueda DO, about two hours northwest of Madrid. The region is famous for fresh white wines made from Verdejo and this is a fitting example. The name comes from the 40-year-old 'baso' or bush-trained vines that are planted on limestone-rich soils at over 700-meters elevation on a plateau along the Duero River. The vineyard is farmed organically, and fermentation is carried out spontaneously with native yeast. Expect a fresh, fruit-driven white wine with just the right balance between charming fruit and aromatic complexity.

Pale, green-tinged yellow. Fresh citrus fruits, succulent herbs and white flowers on the incisive, mineral-accented nose. Taut and energetic on the palate, offering juicy Meyer lemon and green apple flavors that slowly put on weight with air. Finishes on a repeating mineral note, with very good persistence and lingering fennel and lemon pith qualities.

The altitude, cold climate and poor soils result in wines with their own personality. The 2020 LZ comes from an early harvest after a warm year not without challenges (mildew). The Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano grapes come from their own organically farmed vineyards and fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts for 15 days; the wine matured in concrete for six to seven months before bottling. It's very primary and has notes of licorice and a juicy texture. Pablo Eguzkiza was telling me he likes 2020 better than 2019. The wine shows very good balance and fine, round tannins.

Domaine Bernard Defaix is a highly-rated family estate based in Milly, with the vines for this bottling averaging 30 years age. Ten months lees ageing adds to the complexity on both the nose and palate. Refined, classy and complex characters on show here, which meld beautifully with the ripe peachy fruit notes. A very fine, expressive, distinctive Chablis which is ready to drink now but will age very well for many years.

Produced with the RIPASSO technique deliberately applied in a more restrictive way than the production specifications, it is obtained by passing the Valpolicella Classico over the Amarone pomace only once. The result is an authentic local wine that elegantly displays a beautiful complexity of fruity aromas and spicy tones well supported by good acidity and the right alcohol content. 

A deep intense ruby red colour, with hints of red fruit, spices and cocoa on the nose. Warming and smooth on the palate, nicely balanced by rounded tannins. Perfectly matches with meat and cheese based dishes.

Intense, graceful and perfumed, with sweet violets, blood oranges, dry mushrooms, pomegranates and black pepper. Silky and supple on the palate with medium body, crisp and brilliant acidity and firm, crunchy tannins. Long, savoury and balanced.

This is light, crisp and steely with a cascade of citrus notes flooding in. Lemon, lime, Fiji pear and apple bounce around together. There is a creamy mouthfeel with a hint of banana which makes this a great midweek refresher.

It’s hard to pick just one of the many excellent Viogniers that Laurent Miquel produces around this price point, but for the money this is hard to beat, with its voluptuous white peach and nectarine fruit (harvested at night, as the name of the wine suggests).
