CHARLES HEIDSIECK

Charles Heidsieck is one of Champagne’s quietly cerebral houses—less about flash, more about depth, patience, and long-aged wines built to last. Founded in 1851 by the famously dapper “Champagne Charlie,” the house has always had an international flair. Charlie was known for his larger-than-life personality and globe-trotting ambition at a time when Champagne was very much still a local luxury. He promoted Champagne as a drink of sophistication, rather than just courtly excess. The ancient chalk cellars (crayères) at the Reims headquarters, date back to Gallo-Roman times and produce rich, layered wines that are generous yet precise. The vintage wines in particular trade immediacy for nuance and age-worthiness. These are very much at the ‘vinous’ end of the style spectrum, with savoury complexity, and showing their best at the table.
