Winemaker Notes

The Roux family acquired the Château du Trignon in 1896. Back then it was a traditional Provençal farm of the time, with mixed and livestock farming. Since then 5 generations have refocused the farm on the vine and expanded the estate across a number of neighboring appellations: Gigondas, Rasteau, Sablet et Côtes du Rhône.
A qualitative approach is also underway with the construction of a gravity winery, the adaptation of the planting of grape varieties to the land the air-conditioning of the cellar.

In 2007, one family succeeds another as the owners of Château du Trignon. Geneviève, Florence, Jérome and Jean Baptiste Quiot, charmed by the Dentelles de Montmirail and the products of character, wish perpetuate Château du Trignon, in the same time of adding 10 hectares of Vacqueyras.

A lovely pink colour. Spellbinding notes of wood and strawberry. A very flowery mouth, well balanced, smooth and with a good length. Smooth and well-balanced on the palate as well; a soft and fruity wine.

Fruit for this wine is sourced from 50-year-old vines, growing on hills around the cru sites in the northern part of region. The soil is partially granitic, which helps to retain heat in the day but cools off by the evening, contributing to the wine's fresh fruit quality. This Gamay is hand harvested, partially destemmed, undergoes semi-carbonic maceration and is fermented with native yeasts. The wine is then aged in stainless steel.

Red-fruited with notes of cherry, raspberry, strawberry but also has a hint of cassis. There is a slight dash of spice, dried herbs and floral character to it as well. Fresh and light with fine-grained tannins. Pop this in the fridge for 20 minutes and enjoy it with a slight chill!

Telmo’s red wine, once again from Galicia, is a red that shows the character of the stony hills and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a red wine made of 100% Mencia, a Spanish varietal found scattered through the country’s northwest. The vineyards are organically farmed, and the fruit is fermented again in stainless steel in order to maintain freshness, and using indigenous yeasts. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is on full display, with its moderating influence playing its part in bringing balance to the wine. While it is ripe and full bodied, much like its white counterpart, this is vibrant and focussed, with no shortage of complexity and minerality.

Telmo Rodríguez’s journey through Spain reviving and recuperating vineyards has led him to work with 43 different varieties. Although established in Rioja, he has also put Málaga back on the map and worked with Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, as well as establishing wineries in other regions. The vines originate from a Heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand around 150 years ago. Produced from the gravelly soils of the Gimblett Gravels, this distinct Syrah shows an aromatic lift of floral and pepper aromatics with lushness and elegance on the palate. 

Deepest red with a vibrant purple hue. So much lift and perfume. Violets, lavender and maraschino cherries lift from the glass. The palate has hallmarks of the gravels in graphite and black pepper. However, the succulence of fruit and beauty of the fruit speaks to that of a truly iconic vintage.

While this is a midweight style, it packs a lot of fruit in its delicate frame. This is the first vintage under Australian Julian Grounds and he has gently extracted this Syrah as if it were a Pinot Noir. Expect a finely aromatic, silken texture with delightful agave-like flavors, pepper, black olive and blackberry fruit. The finish has attractive sap, sinew and fragrance. Gorgeous now for its youthful vivacity but will mellow and provide appeal for at least 5-8 years.

The B Side Cabernet Sauvignon is a deeply concentrated and expressive wine. Aromas of boysenberry, blackberry, currants, Kalamata olive, and dried lavender are pronounced on the nose. This is a full-bodied wine with juicy layers of dark fruit, jam, baked pie, and hints of cinnamon flavor. The brooding fruit is quintessential Napa and Sonoma and with ripe, powdery tannins the wine is soft and easy to enjoy in its youth. The wine is aged for 12 months in predominately French oak barrels (Francois Frere & Radoux) with a small portion seeing time in American Oak. The toasty French oak frames the wine and the addition of a small amount of American oak gives a pleasing, sweet coconut lift. Winemaker Notes

The Seggio river is the largest watercourse in the municipality of Castagneto Carducci. Its source is up in Sassetta’s metalliferous hills, an area that was already well known in the Etruscan period and is extremely rich in underground deposits of ferrous minerals. It cuts across the entire area of Bolgheri and its alluvial debris enrich the characteristic clay soils with precious large pebbles, thus ensuring excellent drainage of the soil. This Bolgheri Rosso is produced with the typical varietals, Merlot 40%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and Petit Verdot 10%, carefully harvested and vinified to ensure density and concentration but also creating a very fresh and easy-drinking style of wine. In the glass, one can immediately grasp the impassioned enthusiasm and attention to the detail that we dedicate to this wine, which makes its debut with vintage 2014.

Intense ruby red in color. The nose offers nice fresh and crunchy fruit, enriched with mineral and spicy notes. The palate is medium bodied with red berry notes. The tannins are elegant, silky, enveloping and very soft. The finish is precise, clean and lively.

The wines of Domaine Christophe all display classic Chablis notes of shells and green apples on the nose, along with a pretty, underlying hint of white flower and lemon. The estate has been in the family for five generations. Sister / Brother Margaux and Dorian are currently in charge of the organically farmed 51 hectare property divided up into two appellations: Francs Côtes de Bordeaux and Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux (10 hectare in red). Both of them are located on the Right Bank in the very eastern edge of the hilly Bordeaux wine region, near Saint Emilion. The terroir is composed of sub-soil made up of fossil-rich limestone covered with limestone molasse called «molasses d’Agenais». The siblings have created a realm of biodiversity, with regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, winter weed management with a local shepherd,  and protection to the local fauna. 

A full bodied, food friendly wine, with flavours of peach and dried grass and a crisp, textured dry finish. Baked-apple and wood aromas show strongly in this ripe wine. Balancing the toastiness, the ripe fruits are complex, peach and apple flavors going along with the spice.

It is at Cornas, perhaps the most secret of the northern Rhône Crus, that we wished to expand the range of our terroirs. There are only 130 hectares of vineyards in this, the only commune that bears the name of its Cru. Syrah reigns supreme on the steep, sun-kissed vineyard slopes. It is not hard to work out why Cornas got its name, which means “burnt land” in Celtic. It is hot in our parcel of Cornas, as it is throughout the entire appellation, with a dry heat which results in extremely ripe grapes. It is also not surprising that the harvesting of the northern Rhône’s red grapes often starts with this Cru.

To pay tribute to the terroir where our vines culminate and in our quest for excellence, we have named our Cru Hypsos. Litterally, “Hypso” means height in Greek, but remember that in ancient times, according to the philosophers, Hypsos meant a sublime and perfect achievement.

This quest for excellence is coupled with the strong character of this micro-terroir made up of granite and saprolite. Helios, the Sun, which shines on our vines, helps to achieve Hypsos. 

The dark, opaque, almost black-red hue of our Cornas displays purple tints in its youth, which take on beautiful amber tones over time. The wine is an explosion of red fruit on the nose, where subtle hints of violets and intense notes of pepper can also be detected. With age, the wine offers up aromas of truffle, liquorice and cooked fruit. This wine, for laying down, is instantly seductive due to the power of its tannins and later, due to their smooth and velvety texture.Ideal drinking temperature: 16°C. Food pairing suggestions: This wine, when young, pairs wonderfully well with red meats. With age, it is perfect with game.

Short-pruned 40-50 year old vines from the "Wolfreben" lieu-dit in the Kaysersberg valley between the Clos des Capucins and the village of Kaysersberg. The soil is sand-silt on granite pebbles. The grapes growing on this terroir ripen early and produce wines with powerful concentration. Aged in large, old oak vats for 8–10 months. RS 11.6 g/l, TA 3.6 g/l, pH 3.7.
Seductive, pungent, rich nose suggestive of both cream and lychees. Luscious mid palate but finishes dry. Surprisingly appetising and contained – and characteristically varietal. Satin-smooth on the palate and, I would imagine, very versatile at the table.

Domaine Weinbach's "RB0" (Riesling de la Butte de Calvaire) represents one of the estate's forays into crafting natural wines with zero alterations, preservatives or additions in the winery.

Like the other wines in the '0' series, this drop is made from grapes grown in vineyards more recently acquired by the estate and in conversion to biodynamics. This particular parcel is located on the southern tip of the famed Mamburg Grand Cru site, producing outstanding fruit.

Made with Pinot Gris and using traditional skin contact techniques this wine is indeed orange in appearance with aromas and flavours of peach tea and apricot, fruit spices and wild flowers. There’s a core of mineral chalk and scents of kishmish fruits. Plenty of texture that dances across the palate. Fruit tannins and acidity add texture and length with the flavours of persimmon and apricot, peach, apple and quince. Really quite a lovely wine with best drinking upon purchase.

Le Sol (french: the soil) is born of the renowned Gimblett Gravels viticultural appellation with its gravelly soils attracting the sun in summer and insulating the vines in winter. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s. Intensively hand managed, the grapes reveal a deep and dark Syrah with purple hues. Le Sol is always aromatically pure with a luscious yet elegant mid-palate and a distinctive fine tannin finish.

Inky purple-red. Enticing aromatics of boysenberry, blueberry, violets, clove and lightly seared meat. The wine exhibits a richness of fruit yet carries an ethereal quality as the fine-grained tannins dance gracefully across the palate.

Mas Mallola brings to life the virtues of the land of the Porrera village. It is produced with garnacha and carignan grapes from the «La Mallola » area. The influence of the vineyard soil (slate) and the particular climate create a true expression of terroir combined with flavour complexity and mature, balanced dark and deep fruit.  “La Mallola” plot is situated at 650 metres of altitude, it is south oriented and has very particular grey and red slates.

Aromas of berry, cherry and earthy schist. This wine feels tight and pure, with firm tannins and a gritty personality. Toasty  flavors of mocha, black cherry, raspberry and cassis are generous.

The vineyards of Pernand-Vergelesses are on a very hilly area. They stretch over the slopes in between the hills of Aloxe Corton and Savigny-les-Beaune. In the village of Pernand-Vergelesses only six plots are classified as red Premiers Crus: les Fichots, en Caradeux, Creux de la Net, Iles des Vergelesses, Les Vergelesses, and Les Plantes des Champs. This locality is one of the oldest vineyards of Burgundy. It was planted in 1158 by the monks of the Abbaye de Maizières on a limestone marl soil.

Lovely dark garnet color with a beautiful shine.
Good aromatic intensity. The nose is very fresh with notes of small red and black fruits on a mineral and smoky background (marl limestone).
Well delineated, fresh and fruity on the palate. Good structure and balance, the tannins are present but fine. Persistent finish ending on the fruitiness and mineral freshness.
