Outstanding quality from a growing season that threatened, at times, to be tricky. After some heat in January, the moderate, dry and sunny months of February and March delivered beautifully balanced fruit. Crop levels were slightly below average, enhancing flavour and intensity.

Its crystal clear quartz-green hue signals the ’21 vintage in all its glory, the bouquet and palate a seamless array of nectarine, grapefruit and cashew. Winemaking Notes

These vines naturally produce low yields due to a combination of unique orientation, free drainage and high exposure. Together with this, the soil has a far greater prevalence of ironstone pebbles than any other part of the vineyard and delivers wine with great concentration and savoury tannic presence.

Always unique, the 2019 Ferrous opens on the savoury side with iron, clove, allspice, and lavender. Fruity and floral notes appear, displaying flavours of cranberry, orange zest, violets and cherry, while whole-bunch aromas add complexity. There is gentle power to the palate with an attractive combination of savoury flavours and purple fruits. The ultra-fine tannins offer a pleasingly dry, moreish spiciness, leading to a long and sustained finish of black cherry and lifted florals. While the wine can be enjoyed now, it demands cellaring to show its full potential.

Winemaker Notes

This single-block wine was sourced from just 0.7 ha of 22-year-old gently sloping Chardonnay vines within the 2.76 ha Farrago block. The mottled appearance of the clay soil in the Farrago block is caused by a high percentage of ironstone pebbles, much like the Ferrous block. This siliceous influence infuses the resulting wines with linearity and minerality. The wine was whole-bunch pressed directly into French barriques (20% new) and fermented with indigenous yeast. It spent 11 months aging on the lees before being bottled unfined and with minimal filtration.

A powerful linear acidity drives long into a pithy grapefruit ring finish. Citrus flavours appear on the palate, together with a touch of oak spice and some complexing sulphides. Length, balance and powerful acidity suggest the wine will gain high amounts of interest with time in the cellar.

This single-block wine is sourced from a 0.75 ha plot that is, as the name suggests, the most sheltered of Kooyong’s vineyards. The lack of exposure to strong winds allows the vines to keep a rich green canopy until comparatively late in the ripening period. Haven Pinot usually enters more of a purplish fruit spectrum that is rich and lush, yet with a firm underlying tannic structure.

The 2019 Haven’s brooding, fruit-driven nose speaks strongly of the Northern growing areas of the Mornington Peninsula. Bright fruit notes of red and black cherry together with plummier tones transform into diverse aromas of dry rosemary, cooling mint, and dried spices such as cardamom and anise. Fresh, supple fruits run through the core of the palate, cajoled by fine and chewy tannins into length and drive. Dense flavours of citrus and sour cherry contribute to a powerful finish, a hallmark of Haven. While the wine feels assured now, it will develop over time as the tannins release their grip on the palate.

Winemaker Notes

The Meres Pinot comes from a 0.6 ha block on a gentle north-facing slope. The vines are the most exposed of all Kooyong’s Pinot plantings, leading to low vigour and low yields. The combination of the soils (less loamy topsoil and more clay subsoil than the other blocks), exposure and low vigour produce highly aromatic and perfumed red fruited Pinot Noir with a structure that, as the vines age, is becoming more robust and serious. Meres uses a portion of whole bunches in the fermentation and is the most aromatic of Kooyong’s Pinots.

Red cherry, raspberry and cranberry are present on the silky, mid-weighted palate. Energy and brightness are key, but not at the expense of length and depth. Lively acidity and dusty tannins from the whole bunch inclusion offer grip on the pithy orange peel accented finish. The acid and tannin provide the wine with freshness and the foundation for future development.

Vat 9 Shiraz is sourced from the oldest and best blocks on the Tyrrell Estate ‘Ashmans’, where the oldest vines date back to 1892. The majority of the blend is made from fruit from the Weinkeller and Short Flat vineyards. All of these blocks feature soils that are ideal for growing super-premium Shiraz.

Coming off a difficult vintage, gee this is showing well. It has flavour, as in from the fruit not just the oak and leesy characters, which are here too. Complex, layered with poached quince and ginger and sun-bleached hay, yet tight. Zesty and bright with a lightening rod of acidity so this needs more time.

Winemaker Notes

Planted in 1991, the soil of the dry grown Belford vineyard is light and sandy – the consistency of talcum powder – for the top 50 centimetres. It is the northern-most of the Tyrrell’s Hunter Valley vineyards. A rich, complex nose of fruit, oak and a slight solids character. A powerful palate with the fruit characters being balanced well with the oak and mid-palate grainy texture. The wine finishes with a soft, refreshing acid profile, a benefit of no malolactic fermentation.

Beautifully tailored structure here, from this plot that was planted in 1908 in sandier soil. There’s a beautifully complex nose with a wealth of raspberries, red plums, nectarines and complex spices, deriving from the use of a new cask that adds particular interest in 2018. The tannins are assertive and gently muscular. Great drive and detail. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
