Te Kahu means 'the cloak' in te reo Maori and refers to the mist that envelops Giants Winery in the Tukituki Valley. Legend has it that this mist was used to protect a mythical Maori maiden from the sun as she visited her lover Te Mata. This is a wine of richness and an abundance of black fruit flavours and a long structured finish. Bright nose with notes of cedar, cassis and blackcurrant mingled with dried tobacco. The palate is very precise, revealing black fruit and violets with great energy. There is plenty of chocolate framing the tannins, and it has a fantastic structure. On ref ection, a perfect example of a Bordeaux style blend from the Gimblett Gravels with an excellent future ahead
94 Points, Wine Enthusiast This may be Merlot-dominant, but the two Cab varieties make their mark via savory herbs and spice, graphite and toasted dark chocolate. There's plenty of appealing dark cherry and blackberry fruit notes here, too. A lovely lift of acidity, fine, savory tannins, violets and and tangy blue and blackberry fruit linger to a long finish. Elegant, expressive, well made and a bargain for the quality.
