Alta Marfa is an exciting young winery founded by avid wine enthusiasts Ricky Taylor and Katie Jablonski in 2016. Inspired by their love of wine and desire to start their own business, they endeavoured to find the place best suitable for growing grapes for their new venture. They googled “where is the coolest weather in Texas in the summer?” and discovered the answer was the Davis Mountains, located in the middle of nowhere in west Texas where they then purchased 25 acres of undeveloped land. With help from an army of friends and family, they drilled a well, put up a deer fence, cleared some cactuses, built an irrigation system and planted vines. While they wait for their own vines to reach maturation, Alta Marfa has been producing a series of exceptional and unique small batch wines using high altitude grapes which they source from select farmers in Texas and New Mexico who share similar philosophies and respect their soils using organic and sustainable practices.
