SCHUG WINERY

Legendary German-born winemaker Walter Schug originally gained fame as the founding winemaker for Joseph Phelps back in the 1970’s. There he earned critical acclaim with just about every major wine varietal and for creating the iconic “Insignia”, California's first proprietary Bordeaux-style blend. Wanting to give more of his focus to his favourite varietals Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, he established his own 42 acre winery Schug Carneros in 1980. Today the family-owned winery is led by Walter’s children Alex and Claudia and dynamic German-American winemaker Johannes Scheid, who brings modern touches to the estate’s European-styled wines. Together they are dedicated to preserving Walter Schug's rich legacy and his passion for winemaking.
