The Monte Sant’Urbano property in the municipality of Fumane: located on a hill at between 280 and 350 m./a.s.l., it benefits from excellent exposure to sunlight. The average age of the vines is high. Manual selection of the finest bunches followed by drying for around 100 days, with a loss of about 40% in the weight of the grapes. These are destemmed and pressed and fermentation with maceration takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. 24 months in 500 l. French oak tonneaux and 18 months in medium-to-large Slavonian oak casks. Maturation in bottle for 12 months.

Bright, inviting floral, pear and citrus aromas lead to a lively and harmonious palate.  Resplendent with jasmine and citrus notes that range from grapefruit to lemongrass and kafir lime, delightfully nuanced by tropical notes, this wine delivers quintessential Honig sauvignon blanc style.

The grapes were harvested during cooler night-time and early morning temperatures, preserving the inherent aromas and flavors. All the fruit was whole cluster pressed and the juice was settled before racking off lees. Fermentation was at moderately cool temperatures (60-65 F) in stainless steel tanks using a variety of yeast strains selected to enrich the aroma and flavor profiles of Sauvignon Blanc.  Aged on light lees, in stainless steel tanks, prior to blending and bottling.

Marietta Cellars sits in the entrance to a small canyon off Alexander Valley. Known as Angeli Ranch after the family who originally settled here in 1886, this property’s vineyards connect gravel swales from the Russian River to terraced knolls invisible from the valley floor. The extremes of this site create a wine that is powerful but has surprising elegance and clarity. 

The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA. It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California. This ancient, dry farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. Reflecting the hidden property where it is grown, this Syrah is quiet, obscure and profound. Limited in production due to the unique grape source, this wine is built to enjoy with food and will age at least a decade, only increasing in subtleness and complexity.

Freedom Hill Vineyard is located in the foothills of the Coast Range, 10 miles SW of Salem, Oregon. During the day warm air rises from the valley floor ripening the skins. At night, cool ocean breezes act to retain acidity. Planted on old sedimentary soils, the vines have a SW exposure at an elevation of 520’ to 580’. Our Pinot noir comes from two blocks, one planted in 2004 with Pommard and Wädenswil and one planted in 2008 with 777.

There is a wild and rustic side to the 2019 Las Olvidadas Mezcla Tinta, even more noticeable in the 2020 I also tasted. It comes from their vineyard in Santa Cruz de Guarilihue where the ancient vines of País and San Francisco vines are intermixed in the field. 2019 was a dry vintage in Itata, but they managed to keep the wine at 13% alcohol and with mellow acidity. The grapes fermented together after being hand destemmed with a zaranda destemmer like the traditional Pipeño wines, without any additions. The wine was put in barrel for malolactic and 18 months of aging. It's perfumed and intriguing, light to medium-bodied and with a strong personality. 4,371 bottles and 50 magnums were filled in October 2020.

Momtazi Vineyard is located in the McMinnville AVA, 7 miles west of McMinnville, Oregon. The Pinot Noir grapes for this wine come from four blocks at the top of the vineyard on a steep, exposed and windblown hillsides. Planted in 1999 and 2004 on thin, poor soils, the vines have a south and SW exposure at an elevation of 680-760'. The vineyard is certified biodynamic by Demeter. 

Dark ruby red color. Deep perfumed aromas of dried red fruit, concentrated tomato paste, turmeric, and red peppercorns are beguiling and draw you in. The mouth begins with fresh dark red fruit that quickly crescendos, radiating blackberries and blueberries, sweet tar, and spices throughout your palate. Lovely textural richness coats your palate (the “umami”), leaving denser tannins and beautifully balanced acidity. As hard to resist as it is now, this vintage of Momtazi will reward your patience. Perfect with earthy dishes with umami like pho, ramen, braised meats, roasts, mushrooms or dishes with eastern spices.

Winemaker Notes:

Our flagship white wine, a wine of grace and elegance, is a classic Bordeaux blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Each vineyard block was separately harvested, by hand, at peak maturity. The grapes were whole-cluster pressed and then fermented entirely in barrel (French oak puncheons) with the majority undergoing only wild, spontaneous fermentation. One-quarter of the barrels were also allowed to undergo wild malolactic fermentation. All lots were barrel-aged for nine months, on the lees, with lees stirring. The final wine was created by blending together just the very best barrel lots, in order to create a wine of true complexity and elegance.

This wine is light gold in the glass. It has intense aromas of grapefruit, beeswax, lime zest, and meadow grasses. On the palate, it shows an array of flavours: lemon and lime and ripe grapefruit, with notes of peach and apricot and all tied together with bright, crisp citrus acidity. On the palate, the wine is full and rich with a textural softness resulting from sur-lie ageing. A lovely saline minerality strings it all together, through to the very long finish.

Notes

Savagnin blanc is mostly grown in the Jura. It is most famous as the only grape allowed in the vin jaunes of Château-Chalon and L'Étoile, similar to fino sherry with a covering of flor but not fortified and without the use of the solera system.

100% Savagnin aged for 4 years in barrel without being topped up before bottling. This is a “baby Vin Jaune” according to Jean Francois. Powerful aromatics and richness.

Caves Jean Bourdy is one of the oldest domaines in the Jura. Created in the late 1400’s, the Domaine is now run by brothers Jean-Phillipe and Jean-François, the 15th generation of winemakers at this estate. The Bourdys grow their vines on 10 hectares of land, including a half hectare in Chateau Chalon AOC. Caves Jean Bourdy makes wine the old fashioned way, using old barrels—some as much as 80 years old—for fermentation and aging of the wines. The Domaine was certified biodynamic in 2006, and the combination of some of the best terroir in the Jura and careful and patient winemaking results in wines that thoroughly express the land on which it is grown.

Concentrated and perfectly balanced, ruby colour with hints of purple. The nose combines aromas of red berries, floral notes, as well as saffron and sweet spices. The palate is full-bodied, rounded and smooth with soft and silky tannins. The finish of this perfumed wine is long and resonates with complexity.Medium density, it exudes notes of cherry and dark berries on the nose.  There are also slight hints of vanilla and leather, everything very clean and precise. It's a real pleasure on the palate right from the start - great fruit sweetness, some spices, red berries, lots of cherries and a touch of vanilla. Gentle, silky tannins and a good, very balanced acidity. Very nice wine, easy to drink now with storage potential for 10-15 years.

The Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation consists of two parts. In the north, its soils are rich in alluvial deposits from the Meuzin valley. In the south, the silty soils come from the Vallerots Valley. The top of the hill has exposed limestone rocks. Born from vines on a clay-rich plot, our Nuits-Saint George is at once intense and complex.

Aged mostly in neutral French oak barrels (15 percent were new), this developed a textural grace without the weight of oak tannins, feeling airy in its richness. The grapes are harvested at night and fermented at a low temperature. This seems to bring out the best in them. Some of these grapes are aged in barrels before they are all blended back together. It’s an unusual method but from the unusual comes the exceptional.

Côte 228 is a well-balanced wine with rich oak aged character. This complex wine shows generous fruit aromas such as crisp pears. The finish is mineral.

The Ink Grade Estate Vineyard claims a view unbeknownst to most in the Napa Valley, lying in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA. Terraced throughout due to the extreme slopes, this mountainside vineyard clings to volcanic “tufa” soils. Ink Grade Estate possesses a raw tension that renders fruit of immense intensity and depth. If ever there was a site that imparted a feeling of reverence, Ink Grade is such a place.

A house favorite, Andosol draws inspiration from the historic field blends of California. The nuances in this wine pay homage to European principles of winemaking, while expressing familiar traits often found in the new world. Each year this cuvée is crafted to best express the unique mountain terroir comprised of volcanic rock and ash formed in the Miocene era almost five million years ago. Undoubtedly, this site and the inherent stress it lends to grape growing saturates the grapes with intensity and depth. The nutrient-rich volcanic soils and rugged site of the vineyards lend vibrancy to this mountain Zinfandel. A unique perspective of the Ink Grade Estate, this polished and bold wine is meant to be enjoyed in its youth but will also age incredibly well.

 The Ink Grade Estate Vineyard claims a view unbeknownst to most in the Napa Valley, lying in the northeast corner of the Howell Mountain AVA. Terraced throughout due to the extreme slopes, this mountainside vineyard clings to volcanic “tufa” soils. Ink Grade Estate possesses a raw tension that renders fruit of immense intensity and depth. If ever there was a site that imparted a feeling of reverence, Ink Grade is such a place.

The varying and distinctive landscape of the vineyard parcels included in this Cabernet Sauvignon allow for something very complex to come together. With balance across the board, the fruit from the unique parcels each occupy a certain piece of terrain covering much of the Napa Valley with variations in slope and elevation. Incorporating a portion of Howell Mountain Cabernet, the blending notes of this wine are phenomenal with base notes, high notes, and incredible breadth.

The Ink Grade Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a nose of fresh cassis, pomegranate, and cocoa with elements of thyme, mint, candied orange peels, nutmeg, cloves, and paprika. Winemaker Notes

Two new vineyard sources are at the core of this blend. From alluvial soils slightly further inland than our West Sonoma Coast Estate, young vine Old Wente and old vine Clone 4 combine to capture the essence of how we, at Ernest, view Chardonnay. Ripening earlier in the season, these grapes are picked with the acid still very intact but with full physiological ripeness. The old vines giving us full pear and ripe apples notes while the Old Wente drives the palate with minerality and verve. Native fermentations in 228L French Oak barrels, 25% of which are new, this wine was bottled after 10 months on the lees, and a light filtration.

A bright canary yellow wine with clear and luscious golden hues. The fruit notes are reminiscent of Asian pears and loquats with hints of sour unripe pineapples. The minerality is also up-front with nuances of ocean air, wet sands, and oyster shells. For Burgundy lovers, this Chardonnay has the subtlety of flavors and exuberance of acidity and terroir. This is without a doubt a “wine of place” our newest AVA - the maritime-influenced 'West Sonoma Coast'.

The Gibson Block is the heart of the McDowell Valley AVA. It is planted with some of the oldest Syrah and Grenache in California. This ancient, dry farmed mixed block next to the original Gibson Homestead has been producing grapes for over a hundred years. Known for giving body and structure to Pommard’s Clos Marey-Monge Monopole, the Grands Esprits plot makes Pommard of great quality and structure. The 4.81-hectare plot of Grands Esprits has large, round, rocky, limestone-rich soils planted between 1970 and 1980. It produces a straight Pinot Noir with firm tannins and potential for long aging. Occupying almost one-quarter of our vineyard’s overall area, the 220 rows of Grands Esprits is the most calcareous area in the Clos Marey-Monge. Hand-harvested organic grapes, hand-sorted on a vibrating table. 20% whole-cluster. Placed into stainless steel fermentation vats by gravity flow. Weeks-long maceration, minimal pumping-over and punching-down. Pressing in pneumatic press. Aged 18 months in 25% new French oak barrels on fine lees.

The Grands Esprits has the highest limestone content of all the plots of Clos Marey-Monge and this supple, silky Pinot Noir with vibrant acidity and firm, angular tannins is a fantastic representation of this terroir. Red cherry and raspberry flavors are intensely ripe yet zesty, accented by tangs of tart blood orange and a deep granitic undertone. Approachable young, the wine is likely to improve through 2035 and hold further still.

Mas Mallola brings to life the virtues of the land of the Porrera village. It is produced with garnacha and carignan grapes from the «La Mallola » area. The influence of the vineyard soil (slate) and the particular climate create a true expression of terroir combined with flavour complexity and mature, balanced dark and deep fruit.  “La Mallola” plot is situated at 650 metres of altitude, it is south oriented and has very particular grey and red slates.

The elegance and balanced structure of the 2018 vintage will make this an incredible wine to drink upon release and will continue to reward with cellar aging.

A pure, balanced and fresh Napa cabernet that is not just showing heady concentration and dark fruit. Here you get some violets, nimble flowers, redcurrants, graphite and fine spices. Some oranges, too. Fragrant and nuanced. Medium to full body with tight yet refined tannins. Rather linear, tense and elegant, but lacking neither power nor definition. Better to give it a few years to deliver more complexity.
