The grapes for this wine come from a single vineyard. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then aged in 225 litre French used barrels for 10-12 months. 

With gentle tannins, this flavoursome Carménère combines intense aromas of raspberries and cherries with ripe red bell pepper and hints of black pepper. Smooth and velvety, it is well balanced, with spice and berry fruit mirrored on the palate.

Younger, more accessible version of the Brunello, but already with an excellent structure and a great personality, Rosso di Montalcino is a very important wine for Tenuta Il Poggione.

Produced entirely from Sangiovese grapes, sourced in the estate's younger vineyards, Rosso di Montalcino is aged in large casks and barriques before a period of bottle aging. The wood aging, although not obligatory for the production of Rosso di Montalcino, tones down the tannins typical of a young Sangiovese and gives this red wine a complexity of aroma and structure that make it a great "Young Brunello".

Intense ruby red colour. Fruity bouquet with red berry notes. Very well structured, yet soft, long-lasting flavour with smooth, velvety tannins.

This Pinot Noir has lovely aromas of ripe black cherries and wild violets. Merlot grapes for this vintage were grown in several of Lodi’s sub-appellations including Alta Mesa, Sloughhouse, Mokelumne River, and Jahant. These different locations provide diverse soils and climate that, when combined, create a more complex wine than coming from one vineyard alone. The wine spends two months’ aging in new French oak.

Thanks to its versatile features, Barbera goes well with most kinds of food.

This generous and fruity medium-bodied Barbera is the authentic expression of piedmontese tradition. It is refined for one year in traditional oak barrels but is still bright with a good amount of acidity. It has fresh fruit notes, a hint of almond and a few years down the road it will become fuller with black cherry and tar aromas.

Telmo’s red wine, once again from Galicia, is a red that shows the character of the stony hills and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a red wine made of 100% Mencia, a Spanish varietal found scattered through the country’s northwest. The vineyards are organically farmed, and the fruit is fermented again in stainless steel in order to maintain freshness, and using indigenous yeasts. The influence of the Atlantic Ocean is on full display, with its moderating influence playing its part in bringing balance to the wine. While it is ripe and full bodied, much like its white counterpart, this is vibrant and focussed, with no shortage of complexity and minerality.

Telmo Rodríguez’s journey through Spain reviving and recuperating vineyards has led him to work with 43 different varieties. Although established in Rioja, he has also put Málaga back on the map and worked with Garnacha in the Sierra de Gredos, as well as establishing wineries in other regions. This Mencía is fermented and aged in stainless steel, revealing the variety’s purity. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Forward, juicy aromas. The 2021 Armé Cabernet Sauvignon is blended with 10% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It has pretty tones of blueberries and black cherries with nuances of lavender, thyme and underbrush. The palate is medium-bodied, chalky and refreshing, with surprising depth of crunchy fruit and floral sparks across the long, juicy finish.

Winemaker Notes

Marietta’s husband, Armé, nurtured my father’s love for this majestic landscape we call home. Like an early morning horse ride through chaparral, this Cabernet kicks up waves of floral, mint, and dusty sage on the nose. Elevated, clear, and refreshing, this wine startles and intrigues. Across the palate a broad flood of grippy tannins is eroded by a core of velvet. Fresh and rounded, big yet steely, with hints of Kalamata olive under the primary note of blueberry, this wine has incredible focus with settled length. Delicious now, this will show added layers and depth over the next 5-15 years.

The grapes for this wine are hand selected from our Estate vineyards in Alexander Valley, the Yorkville Highlands and McDowell Valley. The wine is aged for 20 months in neutral barrels. 6,000 cases produced.

An exemplary California Cabernet aromatic experience filled with dried, minty herbs, and lavender. Blackberries, bright cherries and plums, with hints of leather and tobacco, all intertwine for a wonderfully balanced mouthfeel. This wine is sumptuous yet racy, polished yet spirited, delicious and gratifying- an iconic result in the glass.

This wine is made with grapes from Las Mercedes Estate, sandy soil and very poor in organic matter. Mechanical harvest and aging in barrels of 25% of the wine with contributions from Tannat and Petit Verdot.

Brilliant ruby color with violet edges. Strawberries, raspberries and ripe fruit with touch of pepper and spices aromas and elegant floral notes. In mouth, flavors of red fruit, spice and hints of vanilla from aging in French oak. Very nice freshness. Round, soft tannins lead to a delicate, lingering finish.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, which includes the addition of 7% Petit Verdot and 2% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, pours a deep, nearly opaque blackish red hue. Its classic aromas of toasted cedar, black currants, fresh leather, and tobacco leaf are followed by a full-bodied red with good energy and balance throughout. This Pinot Noir has a bright cherry colour that is complimented by a lifted and complex aroma. Wild violets, dark cherries, pencil shavings and earthy notes bust out of the glass. The palate is deep with blackcurrants and spice being balanced by gentle tannins and clean acidity. Given time in the glass it develops more savoury notes and a softer texture showing the layers to the wine. It is drinking very well now but will continue to develop over the next 10 years.

The Il Poggione 2018 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a dark and savory character with more fruit weight and concentration than you might find in many of its peers. This wine shows a dense center of gravity that is padded with dark cherry, blackberry, toasted spice, mahogany smoked meat and tilled earth. Despite the robust aromas, this Sangiovese is actually quite streamlined and polished in texture. The tannins are soft and veering toward accessibility. This is an ambitious production of 200,000 bottles. The estate's Riserva Vigna Paganelli was not made in 2018, so fruit from that wine went here instead.
